Most people have heard of the seven chakras — those spinning wheels of energy mapped along the spine that ancient yogic traditions describe as the architecture of our subtle body. But the full chakra system extends far beyond the physical form, reaching deep into the earth beneath our feet and soaring into cosmic dimensions above our heads.
In this comprehensive guide, we explore all 12 chakras: the foundational Earth Star below the feet, the seven primary physical chakras, and the four transcendent chakras above the crown. Whether you are new to energy work or a seasoned practitioner, understanding this complete map of your energetic anatomy can profoundly deepen your healing, spiritual practice, and relationship with both the physical and non-physical dimensions of existence.
PART ONE: THE EARTH STAR CHAKRA
Below the Feet · 12–18 inches beneath the soles · Resonance: Deep Brown, Black, Magenta
The Earth Star chakra sits approximately 12 to 18 inches below the soles of the feet, anchoring the entire human energy field to the electromagnetic grid of the Earth. It is sometimes called the "sub-personal" chakra, meaning it operates below the realm of personal identity yet forms the very foundation upon which all other energy centers rest.
Its primary purpose is grounding — not merely in the psychological sense of being calm and centered, but in the literal, energetic sense of creating a living cord of connection between your auric field and the crystalline core of the planet. Without an active Earth Star chakra, the higher chakras tend to become dysregulated, leading to feelings of dissociation, chronic anxiety, difficulty manifesting intentions, and a persistent sense of not belonging on Earth.
Working with the Earth Star chakra is particularly important for highly sensitive individuals, empaths, and those engaged in intensive spiritual or psychic work. Practices such as walking barefoot on soil, forest bathing, grounding meditations that visualize roots extending from the feet deep into the earth, and working with stones like black tourmaline, hematite, and smoky quartz can activate and strengthen this foundational center.
The Earth Star also carries ancestral memory — it is thought to hold the karmic and genealogical imprints passed down through lineage. Healing work at this level often catalyzes profound ancestral healing, releasing patterns that have been carried across generations.
PART TWO: THE SEVEN PRIMARY PHYSICAL CHAKRAS
The seven primary chakras form the central column of the human energy system, running from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. Each chakra governs specific physical organs and glands, emotional territories, psychological themes, and spiritual lessons. They are dynamic rather than static — responsive to thought, emotion, experience, diet, environment, and spiritual practice.
1st Chakra — Muladhara: The Root Chakra
Base of the Spine · Element: Earth · Color: Red · Gland: Adrenal
Muladhara, meaning "root support" in Sanskrit, sits at the very base of the spine and forms the foundation of the entire chakra system. It governs our most primal needs: physical survival, safety, shelter, food, and the basic sense that we have a right to exist on this earth.
On a physiological level, the Root chakra is associated with the adrenal glands, the kidneys, the spine, the legs, and the large intestine. Its element is Earth, and its energy is dense, slow, and stabilizing. A balanced Root chakra manifests as physical vitality, a sense of security and groundedness, financial stability, and a healthy relationship with the material world.
When the Root chakra is underactive, a person may struggle with chronic fear, anxiety, financial instability, dissociation from the body, or difficulty completing practical tasks. When overactive, it may produce rigidity, hoarding tendencies, resistance to change, or excessive materialism.
Root chakra healing is supported by physical movement — particularly yoga poses that engage the legs and lower body — as well as time in nature, rhythmic drumming, working with red foods, and stones such as red jasper, bloodstone, and garnet. Somatic practices that help the nervous system come out of fight-or-flight are especially powerful for restoring Root chakra balance.
2nd Chakra — Svadhisthana: The Sacral Chakra
Below the Navel · Element: Water · Color: Orange · Gland: Gonads / Ovaries
Svadhisthana translates to "one's own dwelling place" and is located approximately two inches below the navel. It is the center of creative life force, sexuality, sensuality, pleasure, emotional fluidity, and the capacity for intimacy and healthy relating.
Physiologically, the Sacral chakra governs the reproductive organs, the bladder, the lower back, and the sacrum. Its element is Water, reflecting its fluid, responsive, and emotionally expressive nature. A balanced Sacral chakra enables creative expression, healthy sexual energy, emotional intelligence, and the ability to experience joy and pleasure without guilt.
Sacral chakra imbalances often show up as creative blocks, sexual shame or dysfunction, emotional repression or volatility, codependency, or a general flatness to life — a sense that the juice has gone out of things. Trauma, especially early relational or sexual trauma, frequently lodges here.
Healing practices for the Sacral chakra include expressive movement such as dance (particularly ecstatic dance, which allows spontaneous, uninhibited movement), water immersion, creative arts, somatic therapy, and working with emotions as bodily sensations rather than mental narratives. Crystals like carnelian, tiger's eye, and orange calcite resonate with this center.
3rd Chakra — Manipura: The Solar Plexus Chakra
Upper Abdomen · Element: Fire · Color: Yellow · Gland: Pancreas
Manipura means "city of gems" and is located in the upper abdomen, between the navel and the sternum. It is the seat of personal power, self-esteem, will, confidence, discipline, and the capacity to take decisive action in the world.
Associated with the element of Fire, Manipura governs digestion (both literally and metaphorically —our ability to process and assimilate experience), the pancreas, liver, stomach, and the middle spine. A healthy Solar Plexus chakra generates a sense of inner authority, the ability to set boundaries, follow-through on goals, and a stable sense of identity that does not depend on external validation.
When this chakra is underactive, a person may struggle with low self-worth, indecisiveness, people- pleasing, difficulty asserting needs, or chronic digestive issues. When overactive, it may produce controlling behavior, aggression, need for dominance, or workaholism.
Solar Plexus activation is supported by breathwork (particularly breath of fire and vigorous pranayama), core-strengthening movement, sunlight, working with yellow foods like turmeric and ginger, and fire ceremonies. Citrine, yellow jasper, and pyrite are allies for this chakra.
4th Chakra — Anahata: The Heart Chakra
Center of the Chest · Element: Air · Color: Green (and Pink) · Gland: Thymus
Anahata means "unstruck sound" — referring to the primordial vibration of pure love that hums beneath all conditioned experience. Located at the center of the chest, the Heart chakra is the bridge between the three lower physical chakras and the three upper spiritual chakras, making it one of the most pivotal energy centers in the human system.
It governs the heart, lungs, thymus gland, arms, and hands. Its element is Air — light, expansive, and connective. A balanced Heart chakra enables unconditional love, compassion, forgiveness, empathy, and the capacity to give and receive love freely. It is also the seat of grief; unprocessed grief often creates congestion and armor around this center.
Heart chakra wounding is extraordinarily common, as most people carry some degree of heartbreak, loss, or early attachment injury. Signs of imbalance include difficulty with intimacy, fear of vulnerability, chronic loneliness, inability to forgive, or the opposite — porous boundaries and self-abandonment in relationships.
Heart-opening practices include breathwork that expands the chest, loving-kindness meditation, time in nature among trees (the forest is a powerful heart healer), sound healing with instruments in the key of F, and working with green or pink stones such as rose quartz, green aventurine, rhodonite, and malachite.
5th Chakra — Vishuddha: The Throat Chakra
Throat · Element: Ether/Sound · Color: Blue · Gland: Thyroid
Vishuddha means "purification" and sits at the throat, governing all forms of communication, self-expression, truth-telling, listening, and the creative power of the voice. It is associated with the thyroid and parathyroid glands, the throat, jaw, neck, mouth, and ears.
Its element is Ether (Akasha) — the most refined of the classical elements, associated with space and sound. The Throat chakra is where inner truth becomes outer expression. A balanced Vishuddha enables clear, authentic communication; the ability to speak one's truth with both courage and compassion; and a rich, creative life through writing, singing, speaking, or any art form that uses language or sound.
Throat chakra blocks are extraordinarily common in cultures where authentic expression has been consistently suppressed — whether through family systems, religious institutions, or social conditioning. Signs of imbalance include chronic shyness, difficulty saying no, compulsive talking or interrupting, fear of public speaking, thyroid dysregulation, and recurring throat or jaw tension.
Singing — even (and especially) without an audience — is one of the most direct ways to heal the Throat chakra. Humming, toning, chanting, journaling, and working with sound bowls are also powerful. Blue kyanite, lapis lazuli, aquamarine, and sodalite resonate with Vishuddha energy.
6th Chakra — Ajna: The Third Eye Chakra
Between the Eyebrows · Element: Light · Color: Indigo · Gland: Pineal
Ajna means "command" or "perceive" and is located at the center of the forehead, slightly above and between the eyebrows. It is the seat of intuition, inner vision, wisdom, imagination, and psychic perception. Its associated gland is the pineal — a light-sensitive structure deep in the brain that produces melatonin and is linked in many spiritual traditions to the "inner eye" through which higher-dimensional reality can be perceived.
A balanced Third Eye chakra enables strong intuition that can be trusted and acted upon, the ability to perceive patterns and meaning beyond surface appearances, rich inner vision, clarity of insight, and access to the knowing that lies beneath rational thought. It governs the pituitary and pineal glands, the eyes, the lower brain, and the nervous system.
When underactive, a person may be overly rational, dismissive of intuition, or spiritually disconnected. When overactive or imbalanced, there may be a tendency toward escapism, excessive fantasy, difficulty distinguishing inner imagery from outer reality, or psychic overwhelm.
Practices that nourish the Third Eye include meditation (particularly visualization and trataka, the yogic practice of candle gazing), dream journaling, spending time in darkness, stargazing, working with indigo and violet light, and supporting pineal health through adequate sleep, limiting artificial light at night, and consuming antioxidant-rich foods. Amethyst, labradorite, and purple fluorite are powerful stones
for Ajna.
7th Chakra — Sahasrara: The Crown Chakra
Top of the Head · Element: Thought/Cosmic Energy · Color: Violet/White · Gland: Pituitary
Sahasrara means "thousand-petaled lotus" and represents the full flowering of consciousness. Located at the very top of the head, it is the point where individual consciousness meets universal consciousness— the place where the personal self opens into the infinite.
Unlike the lower chakras, the Crown chakra is not primarily associated with a specific organ but with the entire nervous system and the pituitary gland. Its element is thought itself — or more precisely, pure awareness prior to thought. A balanced Crown chakra supports a living, felt connection with the divine or with something greater than oneself, experiences of unity and oneness, spiritual wisdom, and the sense of being guided and held by life.
Crown chakra imbalances may manifest as spiritual bypassing (using spiritual concepts to avoid embodied healing), existential depression or meaninglessness, disconnection from the body, fanaticism,or alternatively, materialism that leaves a persistent inner emptiness.
The Crown chakra is nourished by silent meditation, prayer, devotional practice, time in high-frequency natural environments such as mountains or open sky, fasting, working with white or violet light, and crystals such as clear quartz, selenite, moonstone, and howlite.
PART THREE: THE FOUR TRANSPERSONAL CHAKRAS ABOVE THE
CROWN
Above the Crown chakra lies a series of transpersonal energy centers that extend into progressively subtler and more expansive dimensions of consciousness. These chakras are not located in the physical body but in the luminous energy field — the aura — that extends above and around the physical form. They become increasingly accessible as the seven primary chakras are cleared and integrated. Working with these centers is the domain of advanced spiritual and energetic practice.
8th Chakra — The Soul Star (Seat of the Soul)
6–12 Inches Above the Crown · Color: White, Gold, or Magenta
The Soul Star chakra, sometimes called the "Seat of the Soul" is located approximately 6 to 12 inches above the crown of the head. It is the gateway through which the soul enters the physical body at birth and departs at death, and it holds the totality of the soul's journey across all lifetimes.
This chakra contains the Akashic record of the individual soul — the complete energetic archive of every experience, choice, lesson, and pattern carried across incarnations. Working with the Soul Star can bring profound clarity about life purpose, karmic patterns, soul contracts, and the deeper meaning behind current life circumstances.
The Soul Star is also the center through which divine light enters the energy system, flowing down through the Crown and cascading through all seven primary chakras to ground through the Earth Star below. A clear, open Soul Star creates a column of light through the entire being — what many traditions call the "antahkarana" or rainbow bridge between the human and the divine.
Activation of the Soul Star typically occurs naturally as the primary chakras are progressively cleared and as one deepens in spiritual practice. Theta and delta brainwave states (accessed in deep meditation and hypnagogic states) are particularly conducive to Soul Star work. Past- life regression, Akashic record reading, and advanced shamanic or transpersonal practices engage this center.
9th Chakra — The Universal Chakra (Spirit Chakra)
Approximately 18–24 Inches Above the Crown · Color: Gold, Ultraviolet
The Universal chakra, or Spirit chakra, extends the energy field further beyond the personal soul level into the realm of collective spiritual identity. At this level, the boundaries between individual soul and universal spirit begin to dissolve. It is associated with the capacity to access universal wisdom, move into non-dual states of consciousness, and embody archetypal spiritual qualities.
Where the Soul Star holds the record of the individual soul's journey, the Universal chakra opens into the awareness that the soul is part of a vast, interconnected web of consciousness. Spiritual gifts that arise at this level include the ability to transmit healing energy at a distance, deep mediumistic or channeling capacity, and the embodiment of qualities such as divine love, wisdom, or compassion that feel less personal and more universal.
This chakra is also associated with the process of integrating and transcending the ego — not through suppression, but through expansion into a larger identity that includes the personal self without being defined by it. Many mystical experiences described across traditions — the sense of cosmic unity, dissolution of boundaries, or being held in an ocean of love — arise through opening of this center.
The Universal chakra responds to extended periods of silent meditation, deep devotional practice, sacred ceremony, and working in sacred community. Spiritual teachers describe it as the level at which one begins to function as a conduit for divine will rather than personal will.
10th Chakra — The Galactic Chakra
Approximately 30–36 Inches Above the Crown · Color: Brilliant White, Pearlescent
The Galactic chakra sits at approximately 30 to 36 inches above the crown and represents the level at which individual consciousness begins to resonate with the intelligence of the galaxy itself. At this extraordinary level of expansion, the energetic field links with the consciousness grids of the solar system, the Milky Way, and the broader galactic community.
This is the realm of what many traditions call "ascended masters" angelic intelligence, and inter-dimensional awareness. Souls who have completed many cycles of incarnation and have undergone significant spiritual evolution begin to resonate with the Galactic chakra. At this level, time is no longer experienced as linear, and awareness begins to encompass multiple dimensions simultaneously.
The Galactic chakra is associated with the capacity to hold and transmit frequencies of light that are coded with galactic wisdom — what some healers describe as "light language" or sacred geometric encoding. It is also connected to the crystalline matrix of the Earth as she herself undergoes her own evolutionary upgrade.
Working consciously with this chakra requires profound groundedness in the lower chakras and full integration of the personal healing work — paradoxically, the higher one reaches in the transpersonal chakras, the more essential it becomes to be deeply rooted in the Earth Star below. Astronomical meditation, working with stellar light codes, and advanced energy healing modalities such as those working with crystalline or plasma light work with Galactic chakra frequencies.
11th & 12th Chakras — The Divine Gateway & Source
Connection
Beyond the Measurable Field · Color: Pure White Light, Beyond Color
The 11th chakra is called the Divine Gateway and represents the threshold at which individual
consciousness merges completely with the Divine — the point at which there is no longer a meaningful distinction between the individual and the Source from which all existence arises. It is the energetic doorway through which fully realized beings, those who have completed their journey through the wheel of incarnation, pass into pure being.
The 12th chakra, sometimes called the Source Connection or Universal Consciousness chakra,
represents total unity with the infinite. It is beyond the limitations of language and conceptual
description. Some traditions describe it simply as "I Am" — the primordial awareness that precedes all form, all thought, and all time. It is the ground from which all other chakras arise and into which they ultimately dissolve.
While these two highest chakras lie largely beyond the reach of ordinary spiritual practice, their existence in the model reminds us of the trajectory that the entire chakra system points toward: the return of individuated consciousness to its infinite source. Every healing practice, every moment of genuine presence, every act of love is a small step along this vast journey.
The wisdom encoded in these upper transpersonal chakras invites us to hold our human experience —its pain, its beauty, its confusion, and its glory — within a context of immeasurable vastness. We are, simultaneously, the droplet and the ocean.
Integrating the Full Chakra Map
Understanding the complete 12-chakra system — from the deep earthward anchor of the Earth Star to the boundless luminosity of the Divine Gateway — offers a profoundly expanded vision of what it means to be a human being. We are not merely physical bodies with occasional spiritual experiences. We are vast, multidimensional beings whose roots reach into the crystalline heart of the Earth and whose crown opens into the infinite expanse of cosmic consciousness.
Practical chakra work does not require accessing all twelve centers at once. Most foundational healing begins exactly where you are: in the body, in the present moment, in the grounded territory of the lower chakras. As that foundation strengthens and the primary seven chakras come into greater coherence, the transpersonal chakras naturally begin to open — not as an achievement to be pursued, but as a natural flowering of the consciousness that has always been there.
Whether you engage this system through meditation, somatic practices, sound healing, movement, energy work, nutrition, or simply by developing your capacity to be fully present in your body and your life, you are working with the living architecture of your energetic being. The chakras are not abstract theory — they are the felt intelligence of your own consciousness, waiting to be known.
Begin where the roots go deep. Rise as high as the light will carry you. ~Rachanee
